Silversea’s Expedition Team trains in the Chilean Andes ahead of the Antarctica season

MONTE CARLO, MONACO, 2018-Dec-03 — /Travel PR News/ — Ahead of the Antarctica season, 12 members of Silversea’s Expedition Team spent four days at pre-season training in the Chilean Andes. Between October 29 and November 3, the team of expedition specialists undertook a number of educational activities, building on their existing skillsets and enabling them to enrich the offering for Silversea’s guests. In its 10th season of deep travel in Antarctica, the cruise line is investing heavily in the training and development of its knowledgeable Expedition Team.

The camp included four days and three nights of camping with skills-based learning and leadership development. In addition to a challenging high ropes course, snow and ice awareness workshops, route-finding and orienteering sessions, a wilderness medicine refresher, and an emergency evacuation scenario, several team-building activities were peppered throughout the programme.

With a base camp located near Chile’s breathtaking El Morado Natural Monument, the activity-rich programme was a highly challenging, high altitude, skills-driven, experiential learning and leadership building tour-de-force. After camping in the rough, practicing emergency medical scenarios, and brushing up on ice and snow skills, the team members parted ways ready to greet the wilds of Antarctica and welcome Silversea Expeditions’ guests aboard. Of the 12 Expedition Specialists who participated in the training, eight embarked Silver Explorer ahead of the Antarctica season.

“A way of enriching the cruising experience for our expedition guests in the region, the pre-Antarctica training camp was a huge success,” says Kit van Wagner, Silversea’s Director of Expedition Training and Staff Development. “This training represents Silversea’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of expedition cruising. Silversea’s industry-leading expedition team offers onboard lectures and workshops, and leads excursions in each destination. Through these types of training events, their knowledge is improved and our guests’ experiences are enhanced.”

Tastes of Distinction to Travel Deeper: Silversea Has Developed An Exceptional Wine Programme

(Monaco — July 26, 2018) Ultra-luxury cruise line, Silversea, has developed a spectacular wine programme to bolster its reputation as the top purveyor of wines at sea.

Selected by the cruise line’s expert Wine Ambassador, Lawrence d’Almeida, approximately 160 different wines populate Silversea’s wine selection, which is lauded by wine experts for including one of the largest and broadest choices of complimentary wines aboard any cruise ship, with roughly 70 different labels. Every major wine region in the world is represented in the complimentary range, as well as every major wine grape, yet Italian wines are particularly well-represented as an homage to the cruise line’s heritage. When relevant to the ships’ visited destination, local wines are added to Silversea’s wine selection, enabling guests to travel deeper by sampling fine wines from across the world.

Designed with wine-related destinations in mind and hosted either by Silversea’s Wine Ambassador himself or by qualified master sommeliers, the cruise line’s range of themed wine voyages unlocks a number of unique oenological experiences across the world, from onboard lectures and tastings to shore-based excursions. The themed wine voyages enable guests to sample an exceptional range of wines and expand their knowledge, while visiting spectacular destinations and enjoying authentic moments.

Departing October 18 and arriving October 31, 2018, Silversea’s Silver Whisper will cruise between Lisbon and Fort Lauderdale for Silversea’s next wine voyage, for which the cruise line has partnered with Comitato Grandi Cru d’Italia and the American Fine Wine Competition. The cruise will introduce guests to both ‘old world’ and ‘new world’ wines, in line with the ship’s movement across the Atlantic. First, guests will be able to sample approximately 33 different varieties of high-class Italian wines, which will be provided by Comitato Grandi Cru d’Italia – a celebrated committee that unites the top Italian wineries to protect and promote the prestige of the country’s most illustrious wines. Subsequently, an addition 19 varieties of America’s best wines will be available, thanks to Silversea’s partnership with the American Fine Wine Competition. Vintners, journalists, wine magazine publishers and co-founders of the prestigious American Fine Wine Competition (AFWC), Monty and Sara Preiser of Napa and Florida will join the voyage as instructors/hosts. The Preisers will present AFWC’s Double Gold Medal-winning wines and/or bottles from wineries named as ‘Winery of the Year’ to guests of the voyage.

Illustrious members of the ASPI sommelier association, Giuseppe Vaccarini and Gennaro Buono, former best sommelier in the world and the best sommelier in Italy respectively, will each join a segment of the trans-Atlantic voyage – to the great benefit of the guests: Vaccarini will accompany guests on various wine-related shore excursions, while Buono will host an accredited propaedeutic sommelier course, meaning participating guests will disembark Silver Whisper with a recognised sommelier qualification.

A further four wine voyages are scheduled for 2019:

• Departing Auckland on January 20 and arriving in Sydney on February 2, Silversea’s flagship, Silver Muse, will host the first wine voyage of 2019. Hosted by Lawrence d’Almeida, the cruise will introduce guests to various wine varieties and vintages in an intimate environment. In New Zealand, guests will be able to enjoy a half day tour of Gisborne’s wine region; trips to wineries in Picton; and a tour of the Marlborough region. In Australia, guests will experience a trip to the Ghost Rock Vineyard, among other attractions.

• On Feb 2, Silver Whisper will depart Sydney for Bali (Benoa), arriving on Feb 16. Also hosted by Silversea’s expert Wine Ambassador, the 14-day voyage will visit Brisbane, Cairns, Darwin and Komodo. A wide variety of carefully chosen Australian wines will be added to the Complimentary wine selection. Among the enrichments, guests can enjoy a private tour of the iconic Sirromet Winery in Queensland.

• Silversea’s Silver Cloud will cruise between Lisbon and Amsterdam between May 1 and May 13, transporting guests to some of Europe’s prime winemaking regions. Visiting Oporto, La Coruna, Gijon, Bilbao, Bordeaux, Belle Ile, Douarnenez, Saint Malo and Le Havre, the 12-day voyage will also incorporate opportunities to sample fine gastronomy from across the continent, especially in Bordeaux, where guests will enjoy an overnight stay. For this particular voyage, Silversea’s Wine Ambassador will select different wines from each country on the itinerary. Guests will benefit from interesting wine lectures and tastings on board.

• Between May 19 and June 2, Silver Whisper will cruise between London (Greenwich) and Barcelona, stopping at Honfleur, Saint Malo, Bordeaux, Le Verdon (Bordeaux), Bilbao, Lisbon, Cadiz and Malaga. Along the way, guests will be able to participate in the 2019 edition of the onboard accredited sommelier course, meaning they will leave with a recognised qualification. Guests can also partake in private tours of prominent wineries throughout the voyage. “From a rare Italian wine that is virtually unheard of to the very finest bottles that no luxury establishment can be without, our range of wines – both complimentary and premium – is tailored to provide our guests with an insight into the world’s best wines,” says Birgit Vadlau, F&B Director. “Our offering of fine wines is unmatched on any other all-inclusive programme at sea. Our wine voyages exemplify the exceptional range of experiences that guests can enjoy through Silversea and incorporate the finest tastes of the visited destinations.”

Silversea Expeditions Celebrates 10 Years of Pioneering Explorations and Destination Leadership

(Miami, FL — June 05, 2018) On June 3, Silversea Expeditions proudly celebrated 10 years of luxurious expedition cruising, marking the occasion with a two-day gala voyage between London and Dublin. On this momentous day, the ultra-luxury Silver Cloud departed London’s Tower Bridge amid great elation to honor Silversea Expeditions’ very first voyage, which sailed under Tower Bridge for Svalbard a decade ago to the day.

In a nod to the company’s continued focus on innovation, Silver Cloud, which was the first vessel in Silversea’s fleet and was reimagined as an elegant ice-class expedition ship in late 2017, crossed paths with Silver Spirit – Silversea’s recently lengthened and renovated ship – in Greenwich, London.

The array of enrichments aboard Silver Cloud’s celebratory voyage included a congratulatory video message from HSH Albert II, Sovereign Prince of Monaco, who had cut the ribbon in Monte Carlo during the naming ceremony for Silversea’s first expedition ship in 2008. Originally named Prince Albert II in tribute to His Serene Highness and his environmental efforts, the ship sails today as Silver Explorer and continues a legacy of sustainable tourism.

“We are delighted to be celebrating this important milestone,” says Manfredi Lefebvre d’Ovidio, Silversea’s Chairman. “I am glad to see that my vision has been successfully realized and we are now recognized for our destination leadership. Since the launch of our expedition itineraries, we have connected people with the world’s most spectacular landscapes and cultures, and, in the process, we have fostered respect and greater care for our planet and its inhabitants. I am very proud of my team and our mission. We will continue to scout new destinations to bring innovation to the world of expedition cruising.”

Over the last 10 years, the company’s commitment to environmental sustainability and humanitarian efforts has extended across the globe, in many forms: in the Cook and Phoenix islands in 2015, guests of Silversea participated in a mammal acoustic survey that successfully added three new species of animals to the national registry; in Bangladesh, where Silver Discoverer made the first-ever cruise ship call in 2017, Silversea visited a remote village where guests purchased regional produce to benefit the local community; and in 2017, when Silversea engaged in a partnership with ORCA, one of the U.K.’s leading marine conservation charities, to enable guests to discover incredible marine life and contribute to the charity’s ongoing conservation work. In the Galápagos Islands, where Silver Galapagos inaugurated ultra-luxury expedition experiences in 2014, Silversea will co-sponsor a camp for children to encourage the conservation of marine habitats.

Looking ahead, the future of ultra-luxury expedition cruising is in safe hands with Silversea. With a Northeast Passage crossing planned, and additional voyages to the Bay of Bengal, the Russian Far East, Antarctica, and Australia’s Kimberley Coast, among others, the cruise line will continue to push industry boundaries. Of special note are two Silver Discoverer cruises that depart in summer 2019 for Borneo’s Camp Leakey – a renowned refuge for orangutans, to which the cruise company enjoys exclusive access and has made various donations to support the protection and research of the primates.

Efforts to champion environmental sustainability are currently, and will continue to be, key in Silversea’s strategic development. Silversea is a member of the Association of Arctic Expedition Cruise Operators (AECO), which is dedicated to managing respectable, sustainable and safe expedition cruising in the Arctic. Moreover, the cruise line belongs to the International Association of Antarctic Tour Operators (IAATO), which promotes safe and responsible travel to Antarctica.

In the past decade, Silversea has developed innovative strategies – such as a dedicated training academy – to recruit an unparalleled team of expedition specialists. This has played a crucial role in the cruise line’s success. On each expedition voyage, teams of up to 28 experts conduct immersive destination experiences for guests. These passionate and insightful professionals offer informative lectures and discussions on board, in addition to Zodiac® excursions and nature walks ashore – all of which are complimentary.

Aboard Silversea’s fleet of four purpose-built expedition ships, guests enjoy ocean-view suites, gourmet cuisine, the personalized service of a butler, and a generous selection of all-inclusive shipboard amenities, including complimentary beverages served throughout the ship, a stocked in-suite beverage cabinet, and unlimited free Wi-Fi.

“We are proud to celebrate this momentous occasion when the ship that launched Silversea on a path to redefine luxury travel now embarks on a new path to redefine expedition cruising,” said Roberto Martinoli, Silversea’s CEO.

The completely transformed Silver Cloud accommodates 254 guests (200 in polar waters) in exquisitely updated suites, most featuring a private veranda. Her elegantly redesigned public spaces include the new Tor’s Observation Lounge, offering commanding views of the scenery, and refreshed boutiques stocked with essential expedition gear. Other amenities rarely found on an expedition ship include a heated, resort-style pool, the all-new Zàgara Spa, and the new Photo Studio, where a manager, state-of-the-art equipment and professional photo editing software are available to assist guests with their photography.

A fleet of 16 Zodiacs provides unprecedented opportunity for up-close exploration, while 10 kayaks offer a truly personalized experience of nature in the polar realms. They give lectures in the multi-tiered Explorer Lounge, run workshops, lead Zodiac and kayak trips, and guide nature walks — all of which is complimentary.

Following her first season in Antarctica, Silver Cloud will trace a path up Africa’s seldom-seen western coast to Northern Europe and the Norwegian Arctic, where she will spend the summer sailing glacier-filled bays and fjords in search of polar bears, whales, walruses and other amazing wildlife. Then, a series of expeditions to Iceland, Greenland, Canada, and Central and South America will culminate with a return to Ushuaia for another season of exhilarating Antarctic expeditions.

Silversea’s unique Silver Cloud completes Refurbishment

Posted By : Alka Subin/ 879 0

Monte Carlo, Monaco, 8 November: Silversea’s Silver Cloud has completed an extensive two-month refurbishment at a total investment of over $USD40 million to become an ice-class expedition vessel.

The ship has undergone comprehensive enhancements to bring guests the luxury, style and comfort synonymous with Silversea’s classic vessels while maximising guests’ expedition experience. The ship is now travelling to Buenos Aires where guests will embark on her inaugural expedition voyage to Antarctica on 15 November. En route final technical and safety checks will be completed to ensure guests boarding in Argentina will receive the world-class experience that Silversea is renowned for.

Unique to Silver Cloud, guests will benefit from a newly installed Photo Studio which enables content editing onboard. The Photo Studio will be a vibrant, creative and inspiring space where guests can master the art of digital photography. With several masterclasses on offer, a dedicated photo manager and an editing suite, guests can perfectly capture their expedition voyage and print images on board. State-of-the-art equipment will cater to both MAC and PC users.

The ship will carry 16 zodiacs in addition to 10 kayaks which have been installed to allow guests to experience kayak polar exploration. Voyages are led by a team of 20 expedition experts in non-polar regions and 22 in polar regions to enhance guests’ knowledge and experience from their voyage. Daily presentations and lectures by experts in the state-of-the-art theatre will also be streamed live to all suites.

The refurbishment undertaken by Palumbo Shipyards in Malta involved a series of technical enhancements including extensive steel reinforcement to give the ship the strength and maneuverability required for expedition cruising.

The bulbous bow was replaced with a reinforced ice-class bulb to allow for navigation of polar waters; new sonars have been installed for underwater detection and new windows resistant to polar temperatures have been installed to ensure comfortable temperatures inside the vessel for guests.

“The successful transformation of Silver Cloud into an expedition vessel following the exhaustive work by Palumbo Shipyards is another milestone for Silversea. Silver Cloud was the first vessel in the Silversea classic fleet in 1994 and it is with great pride that we now welcome her to our expedition fleet alongside Silver Explorer, Silver Discoverer and Silver Galapagos,” said Silversea CEO, Roberto Martinoli.

Guests will be able to enjoy the Zàgara Beauty Spa which was first introduced on Silversea’s flagship Silver Muse. Zàgara melds its beautiful Italian heritage with a 360 mind and body philosophy to evoke awareness and nurture wellbeing.

Further, Silver Cloud’s boutique has been reworked to offer merchandise aligned with an expedition vessel with dedicated essential gear selections.

A guest capacity of 254 in non-polar regions and just 200 in polar regions means that guests will enjoy the highest levels of personalised and attentive service on board. The limited capacity in polar regions also means that all guests can disembark at the same time to explore each region.
