A New Twist On Great Ships

Posted By : Stephen Smith/ 0 0

I recently had the pleasure of spending a few days on Norwegian Bliss and wanted to share 5 thoughts.

Food/Restaurants

I did not have a chance to eat in all the restaurants but overall enjoyed the food experience. I am always a big fan of a pub on a ship.  The Local did not disappoint.  Good beer selection and some tasty pub grub. Food Republic was very cool – always a fan of shareables! We also ate at Tappenyaki one night and it was a lot of fun as was to be expected with a great show.

Go Carts

The Go Cart experience was far superior to my expectations.  The process to get started was smooth and the track was longer and more adventurous than I anticipated.  Most impressive was the speed and handling of the go carts themselves.  I was able to move at a good pace and take corners hard.  I really thought that it would be a very basic experience and it was truly thrilling.

Décor

The décor of the ship was great.  Modern and crisp with soothing palettes. One thing I am impressed with is that NCL seems to improve their decor with every ship – they don’t just keep it the same.

Entertainment

I am always impressed with a professional production of Jersey Boys – the story is great; the music is fantastic – and it was no different on the Bliss. We took in a comedy routine at the Social Comedy and Night Club and both the host and the comedian were very entertaining – a nice way to laugh off feeling full after dinner!

Observation Lounge

This may have been the most impressive space on the ship. Primarily because it was a major upgrade from previous Escape class ships.  It was well designed, extremely inviting and I was very impressed with the small food stations they had that allowed you to grab a snack or light lunch during the day.

I was fortunate to have been able to experience NCL’s newest ship during its inaugural in New York earlier this year.

This ships amazing new features include a race course for electric go karts, laser tag, a waterslide with tube that takes you along the side of the ship, and my personal favourite, a beautiful Observation Lounge.

This Lounge is the perfect spot to take in the fabulous Alaskan sights.

The lounge has 2 – 180 degree forward facing lounges. The lounge sits on Deck 15, and it is simply stunning. The space is 20,000 sq feet, with floor to ceiling windows, that will offer up spectacular views.

Be sure to check out this space when you book  your Bliss experience.

Sounds like Bliss to me!

The BLISS certainly takes NCL to new heights.  It brings sophistication and elegance for the adults while adding some very attractive and fun features that keep it family friendly.

Aboard for the inaugural sailing and christening of the ship, I enjoyed many aspects of the BLISS so here are a few highlights for me.

The Observation Lounge with its 360 degree view, is the perfect place to gather with a group or to slip away to for some private time to watch the unfolding panorama of ever changing scenery.

The Race Track with its hairpin turns takes up two decks on the ship, the first of its kind.  It will bring out your inner race car driver and perhaps you will achieve a podium finish.

Sometimes we just need to indulge and Coco’s is just the place to do that.  Pralines, gelato and decadent milkshakes that you will not be able to resist.  Yes, that is a picture of me indulging in one of the desserts!

One of the hidden gems on the ship is Spice H2O, which is inspired by the summer beach parties of Ibiza.  While relaxing by day, this adults-only venue comes alive at night and is a unique place to have some fun, dancing under the stars with the moon sparkling off the ocean behind you.

Norwegian Bliss Boardwalk

Norwegian Bliss Boardwalk

I recently sailed on the new Norwegian Bliss – my favourite part of the ship was the boardwalk all around Deck 8 appropriately called The Waterfront. Norwegian brings back the sea as a focal point of the cruise experience with this boardwalk-like area where passengers can dine overlooking the water. Located on both sides of Deck 8, The Waterfront features outdoor extensions of four Bliss restaurants including the line’s signature Cagney’s Steakhouse and Italian eatery La Cucina. It also harbours an outdoor extension of mojito bar Sugarcane and nightspot The Cavern Club as well as an ice cream stand called Dolce Gelato. I don’t believe any other ship has this feature.  Similar to walking down a quaint street dotted with outdoor patios – it is perfect for Al Fresco dining in while sailing the Caribbean.

Sounds like Bliss to me!

Norwegian Bliss Traverses Panama Canal locks

Norwegian Bliss Becomes Largest Passenger Ship to Traverse Panama Canal

Norwegian Bliss Becomes Largest Passenger Ship to Traverse Panama Canal During Her Inaugural Tour

Miami – May 16, 2018
Norwegian Bliss completed yet another milestone, as she makes her way to her home port of Seattle, becoming the largest passenger ship to transit the Panama Canal since the completion of the canal’s expansion project in 2016.

As the newest and largest Norwegian Cruise Line ship at over 168,000 gross tons and a capacity of 4,004, double occupancy, she passed through the new set of locks, on both the Atlantic and Pacific sides. The new locks were constructed as part of the biggest enhancement project since the canal’s opening in 1914. Norwegian Bliss cruised through the canal, on her way to Los Angeles, California, and will complete her first Panama Canal cruise on Friday, May 25.

Norwegian Cruise Line took delivery of Norwegian Bliss in Bremerhaven, Germany on April 19, 2018, after which she began her inaugural tour. Her exhibition commenced with a preview event for the European market, before she embarked on her transatlantic voyage on April 21. Upon her arrival to the U.S., preview events took place in New York City (May 4-6) and Miami (May 8-10), with upcoming events to take place in Los Angeles (May 25-27), and Seattle where she will celebrate her official christening (May 30-June 2).

“We are very proud to showcase our newest ship and celebrate one more exciting milestone with Norwegian Bliss as the largest passenger ship to transit the new Panama Canal,” said Andy Stuart, president and chief executive officer of Norwegian Cruise Line.” We are excited for this sixteenth ship in our young and modern fleet to begin welcoming guests in her home port of Seattle and provide them with the outstanding service, dining, entertainment and amenities for which we are recognized.”

Following her U.S debut in New York City, Norwegian Bliss made an appearance in Miami for a two-day inaugural preview cruise from May 8-10 with brand partners, key media and industry representatives on board. Among the guests were Norwegian Bliss’ Godfather, Elvis Duran and members of the cast from the Z100 morning show. Also present was renowned marine life artist, Wyland, who designed the ship’s hull art, entitled “Cruising with the Whales,” and who saw his finished work for the first time since the unveiling in January when he visited the Meyer Werft shipyard. The engaging and beautiful art prominently features a stunning image of a mother humpback whale and her calf as the centerpiece of the design, signifying the beauty of Alaska and the importance of the sustainability and conservation of our oceans.

Guy Harvey, fellow marine life artist and creator of the hull design for Norwegian Escape, sister ship to Norwegian Bliss, made a surprise appearance in Miami, and along with Wyland treated guests to a live painting and discussion on the importance of protecting the world’s oceans and its wildlife.

One of most thrilling features of Norwegian Bliss is the 1,000-foot, open-air race track – the largest at sea. Alex Vega, Miami-based celebrity car guru from Discovery Channel’s reality television show, “The Auto Firm with Alex Vega”, delivered two fully customized electric go-karts on May 8, prior to the ship’s departure. One sporting a metallic royal blue and the other in cherry red, both go-karts were outfitted with leather seats and complementing stitching details as well as sleek design elements, making the race at sea even more exhilarating.

Norwegian Bliss will arrive in Los Angeles for a preview event on May 25 before making her voyage to Seattle.

Starting June 2, Norwegian Bliss will cruise seven-day voyages to Alaska from Seattle with featured calls in Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway and Victoria, British Columbia. She will then cruise select voyages to the Mexican Riviera from Los Angeles and for her fall/winter season, she will sail to the Eastern Caribbean from Miami. In 2019, she will return to New York City and sail seven-day voyages to the Bahamas and Florida, the Southern and Western Caribbean.
