Dedication Of Nieuw Statendam Features Godmother Oprah Winfrey

Posted By : Courtney Anderson/ 533 0

Thousands of fans worldwide joined in to watch the ceremony online live from Fort Lauderdale

SEATTLE, Feb. 4, 2019 /PRNewswire/ — In an event rich with inspiration and tradition, Holland America Line held a dedication ceremony for Nieuw Statendam Saturday, Feb. 2, 2019, at Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Oprah Winfrey — philanthropist, film star, TV icon, founder and editorial director of O, The Oprah Magazine — officially named the ship in a ceremony on board in the ship’s World Stage.

During the daytime celebration, Winfrey was joined by Orlando Ashford, president of Holland America Line; Stein Kruse, Holland America Group and Carnival UK chief executive officer; and Arnold Donald, president and CEO of Carnival Corporation.

“We are deeply honored to have Oprah Winfrey serve as the godmother of our newest ship in a celebration of our shared belief that travel has the power to open minds, build connections and inspire shared humanity across cultures and people,” said Orlando Ashford, Holland America Line’s president. “Oprah’s magnetic energy and astounding ability to inspire others is admired around the world, and today was the perfect culmination of a memorable few days together on Nieuw Statendam and our ongoing partnership with O, The Oprah Magazine.”

Nieuw Statendam’s dedication ceremony followed the three-day Girls’ Getaway cruise to the Caribbean that celebrated the power of female relationships. Gayle King, editor-at-large of O, The Oprah Magazine and Winfrey’s best friend, joined her on the cruise, along with several other senior editors from the magazine.

During the ceremony, Ashford highlighted the connection between Nieuw Statendam, the legacy of the ship’s name and the stories of life-changing travel experiences for the officers and crew, travel professionals and guests, saying: “Nieuw Statendam represents our highest aspirations for connection and understanding in our world. She is a vessel for exploration and adventure across countries, languages, cultures and peoples, and — we hope — a source of joy for our guests for many years to come.”

Winfrey reflected on the Girls’ Getaway cruise that had just concluded, saying “It’s been an incredible experience to see people from across the world come together with one mind and celebrate themselves, honor themselves and honor each other. Everybody gathered, made friends and connected to people they didn’t know because they felt like they had met themselves on some level. I have never seen anything like it.” She then officially dedicated the ship as its godmother with the traditional statement, “I name this ship Nieuw Statendam. May God bless her and all who sail on her.” The ceremony concluded when Winfrey triggered the release of the traditional bottle of Champagne that broke against the ship’s bow.

Following the ceremony, a Gala Dinner was held on board. During the evening celebration, guests were invited to participate in a maritime tradition of pouring Champagne over the ship’s bell as a blessing. This ceremony was a recreation of the bell ceremony on Holland America Line’ss.s. Statendam IV on January 23, 1957, when a then-18-year-old Dutch Crown Princess Beatrix poured Champagne over the bell to officially dedicate that new ship as it sailed in the North Sea. Nieuw Statendam is the sixth ship in the company’s history to bear the name.

Shipyard Tour of the New Nieuw Statendam

Posted By : cruising/ 0 0

It is always impressive to see a massive cruise ship up close.  But even more jaw-dropping to tour it at the shipyard where it is being completed and where the mind-boggling scope of work comes clearly into focus.

So it was a thrill for ilovecruising.com correspondent Martha Chapman to be the sole Canadian member of a team of journalists from Europe and the US to visit Holland America Line’s latest “baby” at the Fincantieri shipyard, near Venice, Italy last month.

The ship was at 85% completion at the time and was a beehive of workers, machinery and noise as the journalists donned hard hats, steel-toed boots and workers’ overalls for the tour.  And talk about a labour of love:  there have been as many as 4,000 workers at one time on board.

The ship is the second of Holland America’s Pinnacle Class ships and will be almost identical to its sister ship the Koningsdam.  It will accommodate 2,666 guests (including) and 1,000 crew. There will be 32 family suites accommodating up to five guests and 12 solo travellers in specially-designed outside cabins. Over $4 million US in art will enhance the vessel.

Passengers won’t go hungry – or thirsty – with 12 restaurants/cafes, seven bars and seven entertainment centres and 139 whiskies to choose from in their own tasting bar.

A new “Club Orange”, available for a surcharge, will feature its own restaurant, concierge hotline and priority shore transfers when you travel in a suite.

The first passenger sailing is a 14 day transatlantic crossing December 5, and then the Nieuw Statendam will sail the Caribbean in winter and Northern Europe in summer.

And it will boast a godmother which many consider a fairy godmother:  Oprah Winfrey will christen the ship in February next year and will escort a three day girls’ getaway cruise.  Apologies if you’d like to be a part of that:  that sailing sold out months ago, within 24 hours.

The Nieuw Statendam carries an investment of over $900 million Canadian, we have no doubt it will succeed with grace and panache.

Carnival Cruise Line Recently Launched Carnival Horizon with Inaugural Voyage in April 2018
Carnival Cruise Line, the world’s most popular cruise line, took delivery of the new 133,500-ton Carnival Horizon in March 2018 in a traditional maritime handover ceremony held at the Fincantieri shipyard in Italy. The 3,954-passenger ship departed Barcelona on April 2 on its inaugural 13-day voyage – the first of four sailings from the European port. The ship is currently sailing on a transatlantic crossing and will arrive in New York on May 23 for a naming ceremony featuring the ship’s godmother, Grammy award-winning musical artist and acclaimed actress Queen Latifah.

The 26th ship for Carnival Cruise Line, Carnival Horizon offers a number of unique and exciting features, including the first Dr. Seuss-themed WaterWorks aqua park, the line’s first teppanyaki dining venue and Guy’s Pig & Anchor Bar-B-Que Smokehouse | Brewhouse, a new restaurant concept that combines BBQ offerings created by Food Network star and longtime Carnival partner Guy Fieri, along with four specifically designed craft beers brewed at an onboard brewery.

Carnival Horizon also offers many of the popular indoor and outdoor dining, bar, entertainment and activity options that debuted on its sister-ship, Carnival Vista, such as the groundbreaking bike-ride-in-the-sky SkyRide attraction and an IMAX Theatre. Guests can also enjoy a wide range of accommodations including extra-roomy staterooms in Family Harbor and tropical-inspired Havana staterooms and suites with exclusive daytime access to a Cuban-themed bar and pool.

AIDAnova will make history as the first cruise ship to be fully powered in port and at sea by LNG, the world’s cleanest burning fossil fuel – an innovation that will reduce exhaust emissions to help protect the environment and support Carnival Corporation’s aggressive sustainability goals.

The ship’s next-generation, fully LNG-powered design is an evolution from the brand’s previous award-winning class of ships that includes AIDAprima and AIDAperla, the first two cruise ships in the world that can use LNG while in port. AIDAnova will be followed by eight additional fully LNG-powered ships scheduled to be delivered across several Carnival Corporation brands by 2023.

AIDAnova will be christened in August with a christening show and live concert, AIDA Open Air, at the MEYER WERFT shipyard in Papenburg, Germany – the first christening of a cruise ship at the shipyard in more than 20 years. Newest Pinnacle-Class ship to showcase reconfigured family staterooms and enlarged Neptune Lounge

SEATTLE, March 15, 2018 /PRNewswire/ — Holland America Line’s Nieuw Statendam is set to debut in December 2018; and when the ship sets sail from the Fincantieri shipyard in Marghera, Italy it will feature distinct stateroom enhancements. The newest 2,666-guest Pinnacle-Class ship will have eight more staterooms than sister-ship Koningsdam, and all categories have been reimagined from top to bottom to showcase more thoughtful touches and innovative additions.

Among the most noticeable enhancements is the redesigned Pinnacle Suite — the largest on the ship — as well as reconfigured Family Staterooms. However, Nieuw Statendam still displays all stateroom hallmarks introduced on Koningsdam, including single-cruiser accommodations, as well as a wider range of suite configurations.

“As with every new ship, we’ve listened to guest feedback and made our own assessments that have led to exciting changes to Nieuw Statendam that will enhance our stateroom experience across every category,” said Orlando Ashford, Holland America Line’s president. “Staterooms should be a sanctuary for our guests, and they are going to appreciate the elegance, functionality and extra-special touches to be found on our newest ship.”

Nieuw Statendam adds five more ocean-view and three more interior staterooms, bringing the total stateroom count to 1,339. The ship features 103 ocean-view and 280 interior staterooms, ranging from 225 to 266 square feet. The ship will have 851 verandah or verandah spa accommodations, bringing the total staterooms that have a verandah, including suites, to 912.

The 32 family ocean-view staterooms range from 222 to 231 square feet and have been reconfigured to feature more living space to spread out and relax. Accommodating up to five guests, family staterooms offer special amenities including two bathrooms and extra closet space. The 12 single ocean-view staterooms for solo cruisers range from 127 to 172 square feet and are located on the forward main deck.

Aboard Nieuw Statendam, suites offer larger, more luxurious accommodations. A grand Pinnacle Suite is an expansive 1,290 square feet with a bedroom, living room, dining area, dressing room and private verandah with whirlpool. Nieuw Statendam’s Pinnacle Suite was reconfigured to offer an open-concept design with the living room and dining area in one expansive space. Guests are greeted by a spacious grand entrance, refreshed color scheme and luxe touches like custom furniture and a double-sided television.

Forty-three Neptune Suites and two Neptune Spa Suites range from 465 to a generous 855 square feet. Guests in these accommodations (as well as the Pinnacle Suite) have access to the exclusive Neptune Lounge, a private place to relax, socialize with other suite guests and enjoy the personalized service of a concierge. Nieuw Statendam’s Neptune Lounge was enlarged to allow for additional seating and more windows, giving a feeling of expanded openness. The fleetwide lounges provide worktables, a large screen television, a library, sofas and chairs, and complimentary refreshments throughout the day.

The 14 Signature Suites are up to 400 square feet in size, and the 104 Vista Suites range from 260 to 356 square feet. Signature and Vista suite guests receive many special amenities, including oversized bath towels, fresh flowers, a pillow menu, mini bar and one-touch phone concierge service.

Guests looking to focus on health and wellness during the cruise can book a Spa Suite or Verandah Spa, Outside Spa or Inside Spa stateroom, conveniently located near the Greenhouse Spa & Salon, and come with yoga mats for use during the voyage and an iPod docking station.

With sophisticated décor and amenities, suites and staterooms aboard Nieuw Statendam are welcoming sanctuaries featuring a host of modern details such as bedside USB ports, customized wood cabinets and luxurious frameless glass shower doors.

Additional amenities found in all suites and staterooms include Holland America Line’s signature Mariner’s Dream bed with finely woven cotton linens; plush bathrobes for use during the voyage; a premium massage showerhead; flat-panel TV with video-on-demand; mini fridge; complimentary fresh fruit on request; and fragrant soaps, lotions, shampoo and other bath amenities from Elemis Aromapure.

About Nieuw Statendam
Due for delivery Dec. 1, 2018, Nieuw Statendam currently is under construction at Fincantieri’s Marghera shipyard in Italy. The 2,666-guest, 99,500-ton ship will reflect the ongoing evolution of Holland America Line. From familiar elements that reflect a rich heritage and classic style to state-of-the-art enhancements that chart a bold new course forward, guests on board Nieuw Statendam will delight in details that are artfully inspired and perfectly presented to create the ultimate Pinnacle-class experience.

While much of the ship’s design will be similar to Koningsdam, the first Pinnacle Class ship, Nieuw Statendam will have exclusive public spaces and its own style created by leading hospitality designer Adam D. Tihany and designer and architect Bjørn Storbraaten. The ship will feature all of the hallmarks of Pinnacle-Class design: grand, light-filled spaces; visual drama; and sumptuous interiors inspired by the fluid curves of musical instruments.

Holland America Line’s first ship to be called Statendam sailed in 1898, and this will be the sixth ship in the company’s history to carry the name. In combining the Dutch word for “new” with the classic “Statendam,” Holland America Line celebrates the company’s past, present and future.

Company set to add 18 new cruise ships to industry’s largest fleet between 2018 and 2022

MIAMI, Jan. 4, 2018 /PRNewswire/ — Carnival Corporation & plc (NYSE/LSE: CCL; NYSE: CUK), the world’s largest leisure travel company, today announced it will launch four new cruise ships in 2018 across four of its 10 leading global brands – Carnival Cruise Line, America’s most trusted and popular line; Holland America Line, one of cruising’s most popular premium lines with a 145-year history; Seabourn, the leader in small-ship, ultra-luxury cruising; and AIDA Cruises, the leading cruise brand in Germany.

The new ships are part of Carnival Corporation’s ongoing fleet enhancement strategy with 18 new ships scheduled for delivery between 2018 and 2022 – creating excitement in the vacation market and continuing to exceed guest expectations while accelerating demand for cruising, the fastest growing segment in the vacation industry.

“On top of the three new ships we launched in 2017, we look forward to the delivery of four more spectacular ships that will help us continue providing extraordinary cruise vacations at an exceptional value for our guests,” said Roger Frizzell, chief communications officer for Carnival Corporation. “The new ships also demonstrate our long-term strategy to build highly efficient, innovative and state-of-the-art ships that offer our guests the latest in onboard features and amenities, while creating excitement in the marketplace that will continue to inspire more travelers to consider cruising as a vacation option.”

Frizzell added: “Our fleet enhancement program enables us to manage the overall fleet by aligning new ship deliveries with our strategy for measured capacity growth over time, while also refurbishing existing ships and phasing out less-efficient vessels. It is a successful approach that helps us meets our number one priority – to consistently exceed our guests’ expectations.”

Carnival Corporation’s four new cruise ship additions for 2018 include:

Carnival Cruise Line: Carnival Horizon – Expected launch date in April 2018
As the 26th ship for Carnival Cruise Line, the largest and most popular individual cruise line in the world, Carnival Horizon will offer a number of unique innovations, including the first Dr. Seuss WaterWorks aqua park, the line’s first teppanyaki dining venue and Guy’s Pig & Anchor Bar-B-Que Smokehouse | Brewhouse, a new restaurant that combines BBQ offerings created by Food Network star Guy Fieri along with four specifically designed craft beers brewed at an onboard brewery.

Carnival Horizon will also offer many of the popular indoor and outdoor dining, bar, entertainment and activity options that debuted in 2016 on its sister-ship, Carnival Vista, such as the bike-ride-in-the-sky SkyRide attraction and an IMAX Theatre.

Guests can also enjoy a wide range of accommodations including spa cabins with exclusive privileges at the luxurious Cloud 9 Spa, extra-roomy staterooms in Family Harbor, and tropical-inspired Havana staterooms and suites with exclusive daytime access to a Cuban-themed bar and pool.

The 133,500-ton Carnival Horizon will debut with a 13-day Mediterranean cruise from Barcelona in April 2018 – the first of four round-trip departures from the port. Carnival Horizon will then reposition to the U.S. with a 14-day transatlantic crossing from Barcelona to New York May 9-23, 2018, positioning the vessel for a summer schedule of four-day Bermuda and eight-day Caribbean departures from the Big Apple. Carnival Horizon will shift to Miami to launch a year-round schedule of six- and eight-day Caribbean cruises beginning Sept. 22, 2018, and will also offer a special two-day cruise to Nassau from Miami Sept. 20-22, 2018.

Seabourn: Seabourn Ovation – Expected launch date in May 2018
Following in the footsteps of its highly successful sister ship, Seabourn Encore, launched in early 2017, Seabourn Ovation is set to debut in May 2018. Designed by design icon Adam D. Tihany, the ship will feature contemporary interiors, modern design elements and innovations consistent with Seabourn’s reputation for understated elegance and impeccable service. Seabourn Ovation will round out the current planned expansion of the line’s award-winning and highly acclaimed fleet.

The fifth all-suite ship in Seabourn’s fleet, Seabourn Ovation will carry just 600 guests, based on double occupancy. The ship offers a number of in-suite amenities to provide guests with a “home away from home” onboard experience including a private veranda in each suite. Guests will also find a number of innovative offerings and programs, including “An Evening with Tim Rice,” the new theater-style experience created exclusively for the line in association with Belinda King Creative Productions, and through the brand’s partnership with Sir Tim Rice, the acclaimed English musical theatre lyricist of Broadway, West End and film. The experience highlights some of his most loved work – from “Jesus Christ Superstar” to “Aladdin” and “The Lion King.”

The vessel is a continuation of Seabourn’s legacy as the world’s finest ultra-luxury cruise line, known for its luxurious accommodations, extraordinary level of service, exceptional dining and unrivaled spa facilities. Seabourn is consistently ranked among the world’s top travel choices by professional critics and readers of prestigious travel publications such as Travel + Leisure and Condé Nast Traveler.

Following the ship’s delivery, Seabourn Ovation will embark on an 11-day inaugural voyage departing May 5, 2018, from Venice, Italy, to Barcelona. The ship will spend the majority of her maiden season cruising the waters of Northern Europe, offering a variety of Baltic and Scandinavian cruises, which will include the line’s signature three-day stay in St. Petersburg, Russia.

Seabourn Ovation will also sail on longer 14-day voyages, visiting the majestic Norwegian fjords and British Isles. Select sailings will also include the Ventures by Seabourn program, which are optional for-charge expedition-style excursions featuring a team of experts, Zodiacs and kayaks with a focus on allowing guests to experience nature up close.

AIDA Cruises: AIDAnova – Expected launch date in December 2018

This ship will be the first in the cruise industry to use LNG to generate 100 percent of its power both in port and on the open sea – an innovation that will reduce exhaust emissions to help protect the environment and support Carnival Corporation’s aggressive sustainability goals.

AIDAnova’s next-generation, fully LNG-powered design is an evolution from the brand’s previous award-winning class of ships that includes AIDAprima and AIDAperla, the first two cruise ships in the world to use LNG while in port. AIDAnova will be followed by six additional fully LNG-powered ships scheduled to be delivered across several Carnival Corporation brands by 2022.

AIDAnova marks a new generation of AIDA Cruises ships that combine innovative design with state-of-the-art technology to provide even greater onboard comfort – the onboard brewery featuring the first-ever beer garden, the beach club and Four Elements, complete with three water slides, in addition to a new escape room for puzzle lovers and 360-degree Theatrium and Studio X, a TV studio at sea.

Highlights include 20 different stateroom types, ranging from a two-deck penthouse suite to spacious family and patio cabins to comfortable single options with a balcony. The ship will also feature the Body & Soul Spa, spanning two decks and offering over 80 treatments from around the world. For the first time, the ship has two private outdoor sun islands for couples; an all-new concept with 17 restaurants – five specialty restaurants, six à la carte restaurants, five buffet restaurants and one snack bar; 23 bars offering a variety of culinary trends from around the world; and the new Time Machine restaurant, blending experience and culinary art to take guests on a dinner trip through time.

In its debut season starting in December 2018, AIDAnova will offer seven-day trips around the Canary Islands. Prior to the Canary season, AIDAnova will make a stop in Hamburg, and will visit the Hanseatic City on the Elbe before setting off toward Gran Canaria.
